FARMERS OF THE WORD SEED - Part 1 Text - Genesis 26:12

TOYE OGUNGBE·SATURDAY, JUNE 23, 2018·

Creation started with the spoken word. “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, ‘Let there be light’ and there was light.” It is this word that is called the incorruptible seed in 1 Peter 1:23. This “seed” (word of God) is undecaying in nature and has the capacity to create when it is released in faith firstly from the heart then through the mouth.

Again, we find in John 1:1-3, “In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.” Here the word is personified. The word is alive and it became flesh. If the word is God and is a seed, then the word can be planted and will grow! The word of God is living and active. Hebrews 4:12

There is an Aramaic translation of Genesis 2:7 which says: “..and man became a speaking spirit.” When there is a connection between the spoken word and a man’s heart, a spiritual transaction follows! Something is birthed! Something comes to life! “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9 This is the spiritual transaction that leads to the creation of the new man in Christ. The perishable adamic nature of the old man in us is removed and is replaced with Christ’s nature. Everlasting life is now birthed in man. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not PERISH but have EVERLASTING life.” John 3:16

In Genesis 26:12, the scripture states: “Isaac sowed in that land, and reaped in the same year a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed hm.” Remember Genesis 26:1 states that there was a famine in the land. My first observation after gleaning through the chapter is that Isaac was never portrayed as a professional farmer. He was a herdsman. “For he had possession of flocks and possession of herds and a great number of servants” Genesis 26:14. The question is: How did he feed the flock and servants if there was famine in the land? Obviously, he sowed seed which must have yielded a bumper harvest.

Secondly, he dug wells and always found water. Gen. 26 verses 19, 22, 32. My point is this, Isaac was not only a farmer of crop but he was also a farmer of God’s word. He understood the efficacy of God’s word which he must have learnt from his father Abraham. Whether he was on the mountain or driven into the valley, he found water. Water being the essential commodity in a time of famine! “The man began to prosper, and continued prospering until he became very prosperous” Genesis 26:13.

In order to prosper we must become farmers of the word seed. We need to take time out daily to confess God’s word. The word is the seed and our heart is the soil where it is planted and we water it with expectation and praise. Salvation starts with confession of God’s word. May God’s grace continue to abound towards us in the name of Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
